Mon Petit Poulet – Roasted Chicken and Vegetables

Mon Petit Poulet – Roasted Chicken and Vegetables

Simple things are usually the most comforting things in life. Whether it’s a warm pair of socks, a hot cup of coffee, or a broken in couch, those little yet familiar things can give us the greatest pleasures. For many people, when it comes to comfort food, chicken is the first thing that comes to mind, and for the French, roasted chicken is truly the ultimate comfort food. All over Paris and elsewhere in the rest of the country, you can find little shops selling the perfectly roasted, golden birds to be eaten at the table or takeaway to be shared with loved ones. This is a beautiful and delicious experience that everyone, French or not, must partake at least once in life.

Not too long ago, I stumbled upon a little French rotisserie in LA that totally revived my love for roasted chicken. Of course, rotisserie chicken is not a new thing in the US – just about every single supermarket sells them, but what makes the chicken at Mon Petit Poulet different from the rest lies in the quality of the chicken itself: free range, organic, and incredibly tasty. The restaurant originated in Paris and is popular enough to have three locations in the city of light.

Every order at Mon Petit Poulet is accompanied by jus – the chicken juice and drippings that come from the roasting chicken that collects at the bottom of the pan. Here, the kitchen goes a step further to create a selection of different flavors of jus: natural, fig, thyme, rosemary, orange, and olive. Whenever I’m by myself and doesn’t have quite enough room in my stomach for a whole chicken, I always go for the combo box, which includes a quarter of chicken, jus, and two sides. The sides here are really as good as the chicken itself and are interpretations of French classics like charlottes (potatoes roasted in chicken fat!!!), mashed potatoes, haricots verts (French green beans), lentils, and ratatouille (vegetable casserole). Vegetarians and vegans will also be happy find that the majority of the side dishes offered at Mon Petit Poulet are actually vegan, with the exception of charlottes and grandma’s carrots and can be sold by the pound!

See those potatoes at the bottom? Amazing.

In my opinion, Mon Petit Poulet is a great restaurant because not only do they manage to make a mighty tasty roasted chicken, but their vegetables are also amazing. My personal favorites are the haricots verts, which are always cooked to perfection with a slightly snappy exterior and soft interior, and the charlottes, which didn’t last long enough to be photographed if you catch my drift. Overall, Mon Petit Poulet is a one star restaurant, well worth checking out if you are in the Venice area
